Lyric Stage celebrates Black History Month with Elton John and Tim Rice’s Tony Award-Winning AIDA. Based on the Verdi opera of the same name, this epic tale of love, loyalty and betrayal, chronicles the story of an enslaved Nubian princess, Aida, who finds her heart entangled with Radames, an Egyptian soldier who is betrothed to the Pharaoh's daughter, Amneris. As their forbidden love blossoms, Aida is forced to weigh her heart against the responsibility that she faces as the leader of her people, but her and Radames' love for one another become a shining example of true devotion that ultimately transcends the vast cultural differences between their warring nations, heralding a time of unprecedented peace and prosperity.
With Music by Elton John, Lyrics by Tim Rice, and Book by Linda Woolverton, Robert Falls, and David Henry Hwang, AIDA was originally produced by Walt Disney Theatrical and premiered on Broadway on March 23, 2000, where it ran for 1,852 performances. The Broadway production was nominated for five Tony Awards®️ and won four, including Best Original Score, and was also named by TIME as one of the top ten theatre productions of the year. The original Broadway cast recording also won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album, and one song from the show — “Written in the Stars” as recorded by Elton John and LeAnn Rimes — reached No. 2 in the Billboard US Adult Contemporary music chart.

Amneris Beautiful and materialistic Egyptian Princess; daughter of the Pharaoh. Betrothed to Captain Radames, Amneris begins to realize the emptiness of their relationship. Bonds with Aida, Amneris’ assigned servant.
Radames The Egyptian Captain and son of Zoser. Strong, handsome, adventurous. Betrothed to Amneris, but lusts after the thrill of exploration and discovery. On the rise in power, but as Radames falls in love with Aida, those values change.
Aida A regal, courageous Nubian Princess who is loyal and has a deep love for the Nubian people. Captured as an Egyptian slave but conceals identity to keep Nubian people safe. Rallies Nubians and gives them hope, but is torn between love for Nubian people and love for the Egyptian captain, Radames.
Mereb A young Nubian slave. Servant to Radames. Faithful to Nubia and immediately recognizes and befriends Princess Aida, as Mereb’s father was advisor to the King (Aida’s father). Position close to Radames makes it easy to make his way through the palace.
Zoser The power-hungry Chief Minister. Manipulative and evil. Radames’ father, who plots to poison the Pharaoh so Radames can become king.
Pharaoh The Leader of Egypt and the father to Amneris. Distinguished, older, failing in health.
Nehebka A Nubian slave who befriends Aida. Uplifting and implores Aida to fulfill role as leader. Aida’s unofficial “lady-in-waiting”, Nehebka makes a robe for the Nubian Princess to help remind Aida of place amidst the Nubian slaves. Ultimately, Nehebka sacrifices her life in place of Aida.
Amonasro The honorable and peaceful King of Nubia. Aida’s father, who is eventually captured and held prisoner by Egyptian soldiers.
