SEASON DESCRIPTION

Producers Catherine Carpenter-Cox and Christopher J. Deaton are thrilled to welcome audiences and artists back to Dallas’ historic Majestic Theatre for Lyric Stage’s 2021/2022 season BACK WITH THE BEST: A Season of Tony Award-Winning Musicals in Concert. This 28th Season kicks off in October 2021 with a Pops Concert of Broadway’s most beloved music, and, in the new year, features three Tony Award-Winning Musicals in concert all with the Lyric Stage Orchestra live on stage: RAGTIME, A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM, and CABARET.

Set in the volatile melting pot of turn-of-the-century New York, RAGTIME, confronts history's timeless contradictions of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair, and what it means to live in America. The original Broadway production of RAGTIME was nominated for 13 Tony Awards® in 1998, winning 4, including Best Score, Book, and Orchestrations.

Set in Ancient Rome, FORUM, takes comedy back to its roots, combining situations from time-tested, 2000-year-old comedies with the infectious energy of classic vaudeville. The original Broadway production of FORUM was nominated for 8 Tony Awards® in 1963, winning 6, including Best Musical and Best Author (Musical), and, in 1966, was made into a successful film starring Zero Mostel.

Set in Berlin as the 1920's draw to a close, CABARET, focuses on the hedonistic nightlife at the seedy Kit Kat Klub, while exploring the dark and tumultuous life in Germany as the Third Reich ascends to power. The original Broadway production of CABARET was nominated for 11 Tony Awards® in 1967, winning 8, including Best Musical and Best Score, with its original cast recording also winning a Grammy Award. The 1972 film adaptation directed by Bob Fosse, which starred Liza Minelli and Joel Grey, won 8 Academy Awards.

SEASON GENERAL AUDITIONS

Lyric Stage is seeking a diverse and talented group of local (DFW), union (AEA) and non-union actors, singers, and dancers of all ethnicities, types, sizes, ages (18+ unless otherwise noted), genders, and gender-identities for its upcoming fully-staged concert productions of RAGTIME, FORUM, and CABARET.

PREPARATION

Prepare two (2) contrasting 16 to 32-bar selections that show off voice, acting, and range. All are welcome to sing from any of the shows in the season, especially if wanting to be considered for specific roles. Pianist will be provided, no a cappella singing is preferred.

BRING

Please bring a current headshot and resume stapled together, and clean, marked, readable copies of your sheet music with accompaniment in your key, as pianist will not transpose. It is encouraged for all actors to provide Covid-19 vaccination status on their resumes. Masks will be required at all times at the Sammons Center, except when actively auditioning in the room.

VIDEO SUBMISSIONS

Any actors (union or non-union) unable to attend the above, in-person auditions may send in a video submission plus their headshot and resume to lyricstageinc@gmail.com. For these initial auditions, video submissions must be received by Monday, October 18, 2021.

For all video submissions, please review:

  • Prepare/record two (2) contrasting 16-32 bar selections that show off voice, acting, and range. All are welcome to sing from any of the shows in the season.

  • For the video, actors may record on their phone, computer, or camera. Audition may be in either a single shot or in separate shots.

  • Actors may use karaoke, pre-recorded, or piano tracks, etc for accompaniment. If actors are unable to use pre-recorded tracks or music they may choose to sing a cappella, but accompanied singing is preferred.

  • Video must be uploaded to Youtube, Vimeo, or some other video sharing platform and then shared/sent in a link via email. Please do not send videos as attached files.

  • Please note the quality of a video submission, meaning professionally recorded video/audio versus recorded on an iPhone, etc, will not have an impact on casting. No preferential treatment or consideration will be given for quality of video, it is only important that we see and hear you clearly.

Actors should also send via email with their video submission link:

  • A headshot (.jpg/electronic) with actor’s professional name as file name.

  • A resume (PDF/electronic) with actor’s professional name as file name.

  • Actors are welcome and encouraged to notate COVID-19 vaccination status on their resume.

Please note that only the casting/artistic teams will have any access to video submissions, and videos will not be downloaded nor shared to the public in any form.

ATTENTION AEA ACTORS: Due to continuing AEA sanctions on theatrical procedures and processes, AEA members are advised that initial AEA auditions will be via video submission. AEA artists have the option to use accompaniment provided by the theatre, but please note that accompaniment and song choice will be limited to what is chosen by the theatre from this season, which may or may not include music from a show or role for which the actor does not intend to be considered. Please email lyricstageinc@gmail.com to request recorded accompaniment tracks. AEA actors may also choose to select songs of their choice, for which they will provide their own track or accompaniment, as noted above. Callbacks for AEA actors, if needed, will be in person using the relevant AEA guidelines, so those called back will receive specific instructions at that time as to what procedures must be followed to comply with the AEA regulations.

PRODUCTION DATES/LOCATIONS

Rehearsal Dates: See individual show descriptions

Rehearsal Times: Weekends will likely be 12:00pm—8:00pm, and weekdays will likely be 5:30pm—10:30pm, with some afternoons for select roles and shows, if possible.

Rehearsal Location: Dallas, Texas.

Technical Rehearsal Dates: See individual show descriptions, but will always be Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of the performance week at the Majestic Theatre.

Technical Rehearsal Times: Typically from 5:00pm—11:00pm, with some afternoons for select roles and shows, if possible and needed.

Student Preview: See individual show descriptions, but every Thursday of performance week at the Majestic Theatre.

Performance Times: Thursdays at 7:30pm; Fridays at 7:30pm; Saturdays at 2:30pm & 7:30pm; Sundays at 2:30pm.

Technical Rehearsal & Performance Location: Majestic Theatre, 1925 Elm Street, Dallas, Texas.

COMPENSATION

Union (AEA): Currently To-Be-Negotiated (Previous for 2019-2020: AEA LOA to COST, $503.00/week)

Non-Union: $400.00 Stipend

COVID VACCINATIONS & TESTING

Though currently not a requirement, all hired artists and technicians might have to provide documentation of full vaccination of a US-government approved COVID19 vaccine regimen for COVID19 at the time of hire. Additionally, though no specific protocols are currently in place, it is also possible that all personnel for each production may have to follow certain guidelines as set and/or required by Actors’ Equity Association, IATSE, SDC, the Majestic Theatre, the City of Dallas, et al, which may include, but is not limited to, vaccination status, social distancing, mask wearing, Covid testing, etc.

Character descriptions are taken from musical licensing companies, and only include brief descriptions of the characters, not the actors, as they relate to the show, plus the required vocal ranges, where relevant. All gender and age assignments or ranges have been intentionally removed, as we would like to consider any and all actors for any and all roles. All Roles Currently Available.

  • RAGTIME

    MTI BREAKDOWN:

    COALHOUSE: A proud and talented pianist. A Black man who believes that he can take part in the new America and will be treated fairly. Vocal range: G2—A4.

    SARAH: A washwoman. A young Black woman, beautiful and filled with a strong will to live, fueled by an innocent spirit. Vocal range: G3—F5.

    MOTHER: The consummate wife and mother. A kind woman with incredible moral fiber. Refined, intelligent, graceful and open minded. Vocal range: G3—E5.

    FATHER: Mother's professionally successful husband. Fancies himself an amateur explorer, he is commanding and attractive. Enjoys being the family breadwinner, a traditionalist. Vocal range: A3—F5.

    YOUNGER BROTHER: Mother's younger brother. He is an erratic and passionate soul, a firework waiting to be lit. Influenced greatly by Emma Goldman's teachings. Vocal range: B3—F5.

    LITTLE BOY: Mother and Father's son. He is open-hearted and curious with inexplicable clairvoyance. Never passes judgement on others. Age Range/Reads As: 8 to 12. Vocal range: E4—D5.

    GRANDFATHER: Mother’s patrician father. He is a retired professor, and easily irritated by nearly everything.

    TATEH: A Latvian immigrant. He wears the trials and tribulations of his past on his sleeve, but remains optimistic that he will be successful. Full of genuine drive and heart. He lives for his little daughter. Vocal range: A3—F5.

    LITTLE GIRL: Tateh's daughter. A vulnerable child in a brand-new home, she has lost her mother and is guarded and shy. She clings to her father. Age Range/Reads As: 7 to 10. Vocal range: C4—D5.

    BOOKER T. WASHINGTON: Brilliant Black social activist. He is an eloquent and articulate gentleman with no patience for Black Americans leading less than exemplary lives. Vocal range: D3—Eb4.

    EMMA GOLDMAN: Social activist. Originally from Russia, she is a leader, a fearless advocate for the oppressed. Vocal range: B3—D5.

    EVELYN NESBIT: The beautiful vaudeville performer, famous for the murder of her high profile lover by her rich husband. Vocal range: B3—D5.

    HENRY FORD: An American industrialist and Founder of the Ford Motor Company. Vocal range: D4—F5.

    HARRY HOUDINI: The famous magician, originally from Hungary. With notable physical ability, he stands as a symbol of the 'American Dream.’ Vocal range: C4—G5.

    J.P. MORGAN: The rich, famous financier.

    SARAH’S FRIEND: A friend of Sarah's who attends her funeral. Vocal range: D3—D5.

    WILLIE CONKLIN: A racist volunteer fireman who destroys Coalhouse's car. Vocal range: D4—F5.

    ENSEMBLE: Baseball Fans; Coalhouse Supporters; Firemen; Immigrants to America; New Rochelle Citizens; Reporters; Vacationers; Coalhouse's Lawyer, Harlem Citizens, and Henson all played by Black actors.

  • FORUM

    MTI BREAKDOWN:

    PROLOGUS (Same actor who portrays Pseudolus in Act 1 and Senex in Act 2): Introduces the audience to the comedy they are about to see. Vocal range: A2—A4

    PSEUDOLUS (Same actor who portrays Prologus in Act 1 and Senex in Act 2): A Roman servant, owned by Hero, who seeks to win his freedom by helping his young master win the heart of Philia. Quick-witted, scheming, childlike spirit. Vocal range: A2—A4.

    PHILIA: A virgin in the House of Lycus whom we also find out is Erronius' daughter. She is promised to Miles and vows to give him bodily what he has paid for, but loves Hero and promises he will always have her heart. Young, pretty, devoted. An archetypal ingénue. Vocal range: B3—G5.

    ERRONIUS: An old man, searching for his lost children. Vocal range: B2—G4

    MILES GLORIOSUS: The archetype of the braggart soldier. A captain in the Roman army to whom Marcus Lycus has promised Philia. Commanding, boastful, and strong. Vocal range: B3—F5

    HYSTERIUM: The chief servant in the House of Senex. Believes he is in control, but is actually Pseudolus' puppet to carry out his schemes. Anxious, conservative, loyal. He desperately wants everything to be in order. Vocal range: D4—G5

    LYCUS: The owner of the house of Courtesans. Always out to make a profit, but also wants to provide good on what his business offers. Vocal range: A3—F5.

    SENEX (Same actor who portrays Pseudolus in Act 1 and Prologus): An old man, father to Hero and husband to Domina. Vocal range: B2—G4.

    HERO: The young son of Senex and Domina. He falls in love with Philia and agrees to give Pseudolus his freedom if he can help Hero woo her. Practical, privileged, romantic. Vocal range: B2—G4.

    DOMINA: Senex's wife. A shrewish woman who dominates to the point of answering herself the questions she asks of others. Loves her husband deep down, but is outwardly controlling, demanding, and manipulative. Vocal range: B3—F5.

    CONCORD BREAKDOWN:

    THE EMCEE: The Master of Ceremonies at the Kit Kat Klub, a leering, ghoulish, flamboyant figure.

    SALLY BOWLES: The headlining English cabaret performer at the Kit Kat Klub.

    CLIFFORD “CLIFF” BRADSHAW: A young American writer who has come to Berlin in order to write a novel.

    FRÄULEIN SCHNEIDER: A boarding house proprietor.

    HERR SCHULTZ: A mild-mannered, Jewish fruit shop owner who falls in love with Fräulein Schneider.

    ERNST LUDWIG: A German smuggler who befriends Cliff when he arrives in Berlin, later revealed to be a Nazi.

    FRÄULEIN KOST (Doubles as Fritzie): A German prostitute who rents a room in Fräulein Schneider’s boarding house.

    CUSTOMS OFFICIAL (Doubles as Herman and Max): German officer on the train who checks passports/luggage.

    RUDY (Doubles as Hans): A sailor.

    MAX (Doubles as Herman and Customs Official): Owner of the Kit Kat Klub.
